Welcomes & Farewells

Jaime Muneoka on behalf of Member Selection Committee

Apologies for this long overdue update! We've had lots of action in Member Selection over the past few months.

Back in March we bid farewell to Greg and Laura in 811, which resulted in a tiny waterfall of units. Gabriela and her family shifted over to 811, leaving room in 783 for Kris and Debbie to take over. The resulting vacancy in 34 was filled by new member, Ella Pisarska and her 12-year-old daughter, Hannah.

More recently we said goodbye to Janice and Meghan Way and said hello to Dave Robinson and Ximena Gonzales in 819.

All of our new members have been longtime Sunnyside residents, so you likely already know them from the neighborhood. Welcome Ella, Hannah, Dave and Ximena!

Member Selection Update

Submitted by Lisa Rouleau on behalf of Member Selection Committee

Hi all,

First of all, I am so sorry, and take full responsibility for the lateness of this announcement. Member Selection is delighted to welcome Heidi and Anna to 26 Sunnyhill Lane! They and their cat moved in at the beginning of April and they have already been active at meetings and socializing outside while beautifying their yard. We are happy to have you here, neighbours!

In other news, Member Selection has been discussing the situation with the one bedroom units in light of the open units and the P&D work with Urban Matters. First, thank you to Eric and the rest of the P&D team for such good communication -- we had a bit of a glitch in terms of everyone being in the know about the full discussion that has taken place this year, but it's 2020, so that kind of figures :-P

I'm writing to clarify what we understand to be the situation as it stands, and what the likely next steps are as they relate to the work of the Member Selection Committee.

FYI, Susan and Buzz, after years of excellent leadership with the committee (THANK YOU!! <3), have stepped down (for now, anyway), and Jaime Muneoka and I have taken on committee co-chair responsibilities. We will endeavour to work as best we can with Sarah Stephens, Laura Doram and Marzena Czarnecka, as well as the Board and other SHC committees for the well-being of our members and the co-op as a whole.

As of the general meeting in January, we were informed that the likely spot for any new build as we go forward -- looking to increase our occupancy along accessibility, affordability and aging in place ideals -- is where the four one-bedrooms from 762 to 768 are. That is not a fait accompli, but we must move forward with that possibility in mind and try to make this the least stressful time in the not-knowing that we can for everyone.

SO. Here is what we know, and what we hope will work as we continue to navigate this together as a community...

1. We do not yet know if other one bedrooms will be affected by the plans. P&D have communicated to us that the hope is we will have a more detailed plan from Urban Matters by some time in August. We have received confirmation from the Board that the vacant one bedroom (as of Aug 1) can be filled either Aug 1 or Sept 1. It will be offered to long-term SHC members of those units first, as motioned and carried in the Jan 2020 general meeting.

2. We have recommended to the Board that those members on the internal waiting list (members currently living in non-housing fit units) be left where they are on that list if that is their choice and not penalized for turning down a one bedroom unit that they then might have to move out of for the construction. We understand that those members may feel frustrated by the change in plans. But the co-op's intention as we move forward trying to expand our capacity is to preserve our community and our members' housing as best we can. The least stressful option is to leave people in their homes as long as we can, and not penalize them for not being in a housing fit while these changes are happening.

We are looking at a long term process here with, as we are all aware, a lot of unknowns. This is the current plan and it will need to shift as our knowledge of the plan shifts. Our hope is to keep everyone in the loop.

If you have any questions, concerns, comments, please do share them with the committee via the office or directly to me or Jaime.

Thank you, friends!
Lisa, for Member Selection

On behalf of the Coop, Member Selection would like to bid farewell to Jolleen, Ben and their two sons while wishing them all the very best with their move back East. During your time with us you made many friendships that we hope you can keep. Thank you for your positive contribution towards our community.

In turn we wish to welcome Beatrice, Modeste and their daughter Shirley to their new home in Unit 763. We hope you will enjoy being part of our Coop family, making new friendships and we look forward to seeing you around.

Member Selection Update

Submitted by Susan Russell

SHC has seen some changes on Sunnyhill Lane over the past few months. We were deeply saddened by the loss of long-time member Suzanne Gibson in September and pass on our condolences to her friends and family.

On December 1st we will welcome Kris Demeanor and Debbie Willis to unit 34 SHL as our newest Co-op members.

For people interested in applying for membership, the 2 and 3 bedroom waitlists are currently open and application forms can be accessed online or at the office.

The Member Selection Committee continues to meet as needed when a member is moving out or when there are duties related to a specific project. Member Selection Committee meetings are held at times that accommodate the committee members’ schedules. If you are interested in connecting with this committee please call one of our members (Susan Russell 403-700-7272 or Buzz Viberg 403-283-9443) and we will let you know when and where our next meeting will be held.

With Myrtle's recent move, the co-op has had some housing shifts. Member Selection filled unit #768 internally and as of May 1st, Sunnyhill member, Rose Ing, will be moving from unit #763 to #768. The committee is pleased to welcome new members Ben Gruihn, Joleen Edmondson, their young son and "baby on the way" to SHC. The family will be joining the co-op on May 1st and will be moving to unit #763. Welcome Joleen, Ben and family, we look forward to seeing you around!

The one bedroom waitlist is currently open and applications can be made through the SHC website. The member selection committee meets as needed when a unit becomes available. If you are interested in joining the committee contact Susan Russell or Buzz Viberg.

Raise a Glass!

Submitted by Buzz Viberg and Kathleen Shepherd

It is with a heavy heart that we said goodbye to long time resident and much loved local identity Myrtle Lambert who has moved out of Sunnyhill and into the Rosedale Hospice. Myrtle became a resident of Unit 768 in 1981 and has called it home ever since.  We have been her Co-op family for 37 years and will I'm sure, raise a glass in memory of her many contributions as we celebrate the Coop's 40th Anniversary this year.

Originally a farm girl from New Zealand, Myrtle has always spoken her mind and been a valiant supporter of the' underdog'.  Under her watchful eye Myrtle became 'caretaker' of our community whether it was ensuring the safety of it's residents by reporting any 'suspect goings on' to authorities, cleaning up around the grounds or being vigilant about ensuring our flora and fauna didn't get damaged.

Nature and animals played an important role in Myrtle's life, she was instrumental in having many of our trees we enjoy today planted and gave generously to several causes. We are so grateful for the contribution Myrtle has made to our community during her many years here. She will be missed by many and remembered fondly.

A huge "Thank you!" Myrtle and God Bless you for everything.
Love, the Co-op xo

Member Selection Update December 2017

Submitted by Lisa Rouleau

Member Selection met this fall and discussed how the waiting list is updated and what notes are included regarding contact. We wanted to ensure that accurate information gets passed along to the office, and to the committee as volunteers come and go. We were kept busy phoning lots of people on the lists and interviewing quite a few, and we removed applicants who had not renewed their status. At this point in time, the lists are still closed.

We welcomed Jaime Muneoka and Laura Doram to the committee and said a sad farewell to Janine Morigeau who has moved away from SHC.

MS also was part of the latest Orientation sessions held at the curling club in November. In anticipation of that, the info sheet we provide to potential new members was updated by our chair, Susan Russell. It includes information about how our waitlist works, renewals, what is needed for interviews (proof of income, references, volunteer experience), expectations around involvement in the co-op, income limits and share payments.

Sending very warm welcomes to Nathan and Hannah Erickson, their daughter Eloise and son Spencer who’ve moved into #12 SHL, and to Coeur Riley and daughter McKenna who’ve moved into #823 – 3rd.  Glad to have your families with us!

Member Selection Committee Updates

submitted by Lisa Rouleau for Member Selection

Member Selection has been busy this summer and we have wonderful new members and neighbours to celebrate.

In April we welcomed Bonnie Robinson and James Jordan to SHC (740) and helped Fabrice, Blanche, Bidea and Jean-Paul  Ndingue transition to 2SHL. Welcome, Bonnie & James — it’s great to have you part of our community (James, are you responsible for all the rabbits around here?…what with magician hats ’n all…) :-)

A 20SHL fond farewell was given to Rance Williams, Meg Tucker, and their children Patrick and Max who moved on to new adventures (they are soon to be on their way to Spain!)

July 1 saw new neighbours in 20SHL as Zahaurul Islam, Dilruba Begum and their children Nafis, Zaima & Nilima moved in. Nilima quickly figured out the joys of hanging out in the common and the whole family has participated in the active common scene. Ask them about Bangladesh and you are sure to get fascinating stories of the adjustment to our tiny homes :-D

September 1 we bid farewell to Fabrice Ndingue and family, who are moving back to Montreal, and we welcome Kris Ellestand, Kiarra Spenst and their son Leif to 2SHL. Looking forward to meeting you, Kris & Kiarra!
